| George
Wilfong began coaching in the Puyallup School District in 1962 and
coached every football, wrestling and track season for 33 years
until his retirement in 1995. That is 99 straight seasons of coaching
without a break. He was the Head Wrestling Coach at Puyallup High
School for 25 years. When he started in the Puyallup program, he
was an assistant to future Hall of Fame coach Ray
Barnes.
Wilfong's teams
captured 11 South Puget Sound League titles, including a stretch
of 8 straight from 1980-87. His teams were Regional Champions 5
times and placed in the top-ten at the State tournament 12 times,
including 3rd in 1991. Three state champions and 42 state placers
have wrestled for Wilfong. His overall dual meet record was 234-99-7
(.688%)
George was named
the "AAA" Coach of the Year in 1983 and was the South
Puget Sound Coach of the Year and Region III Coach of the Year in
1980 and 1991. He was the Region III representative from 1980-1990.
Wilfong always
stressed the importance of giving back to the sport of wrestling.
Many of George's athletes have gone on to coach wrestling at the
high school, junior high and kid's levels, including his son Tom
(Stanwood H.S.) and Hall of Famer Jim Meyerhoff
(Franklin Pierce). He has set a high standard for his former wrestlers
to pass on to their athletes.
His football
and track coaching credentials include Assistant Coach on the Puyallup
H.S. state championship football team of 1987 and runners-up in
1990 and 1991. Wilfong coached six state track champions, with two
of those athletes holding All-Time State Records.
George is retired
from teaching and coaching, although he remains active as a volunteer
coach and has served as the Mat Crew Director at Mat Classic for
the past few years. George and his wife Sibyl have three children
(Peggy, Tom and Christy) and three grandchildren.
