as "The Father of Washington Wrestling," Dr. Tomaras coached
wrestling at Washington State University from 1948 to 1959 where
he organized the first state high school tournament in 1953 and
remained as tournament director until 1959.
He also coached at the University of California at Berkeley from
1959 to 1961 and initiated the wrestling program at Western Washington
State University in 1961 and was the coach at WWSU from 1961 to
1965 capping seventeen years in coaching.
Dr. Tomaras
served on the NCAA Rules Committee from 1959-61 and was a co-founder
of the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Wrestling Association in 1949.
He coached 5 Pacific Coast Conference Championship teams and trained
numerous outstanding coaches in Washington, Oregon and California.
He was inducted into the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame in 1961.
