| Following a career at Woodburn HS in Oregon where his team won the state title, Gaylord Strand wrestled at Seattle Pacific University under Frank Furtado and was a 4-time Division II national tournament participant. Since starting his coaching career at Yelm High School 35 years ago, Strand has coached his team at the 1A, 2A and 3A levels. Yelm has a dual meet record of 232-171-4 during Strand’s tenure. He has coached 49 state placers including 9 state champions. The Tornados have placed second in the state tournament twice (2008 and 2009) and finished fourth in 1994. Strand was named Regional Coach of the Year four times and twice has been honored by the WIAA with their Sportsmanship Award at Mat Classic.
Strand has been active outside of his collegiate wrestling program as well. He was a coach on cultural exchange teams to Mexico City and China; was a coach at the Junior Olympics; has hosted touring teams from other countries along with numerous freestyle and greco tournaments; and officiated at the National Freestyle Championships held at the University of Oregon.
His nominator wrote, “Over the last 35 years at Yelm High School he has inspired, influenced, motivated, and guided countless students and colleagues.” Hall of Fame member Jeff Birbeck wrote in support of Strand, “ When talking about Gaylord, these words come to mind--gentleman, competitive, ethical and respected.”
Gaylord and his wife Sarah were married in 1972 and have two children; Kristyn and Gabe.
