| Darryl Smith was a varsity member on the first-ever Central Kitsap High School wrestling team in 1967. Smith started his coaching career as an assistant at Sweet Home HS in Oregon in 1972 before moving back to the Kitsap Peninsula where he would coach until his retirement in 2004. He coached at Central Kitsap Junior High before starting the program at newly opened Fairview Junior High. Smith’s next stop would be to start the program at Olympic High School, a position he held for the next 24 years.
Smith’s teams at Olympic amassed a dual meet record of 263-101 while winning eleven league titles. He coached 6 state champions and 36 state placers. Nine of his wrestlers would go on to earn All-American status in college and one was crowned a college national champion. 14 of his former wrestlers have gone on to become coaches. Smith was a co-founder of the Chief Kitsap and Noble Firs youth wrestling programs as well as the Kitsap Ironman Freestyle Club. He served as the WSWCA Vice-President from 1996-1999.
Smith was named the WSWCA “AAA” Coach of the Year in 1993 and the Kitsap Sun awarded him their Coach of the Year honor that same year. Smith was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington State Coaches Association for his 32 years of service.
