| Darren Sipe wrestled at Mt. Rainier High School (coached by Dick Brenneman) and Central Washington University
(coached by Eric Beardsley). Sipe also played varsity football at Central for four years and participated in track. Sipe has been inducted into the Central Washington University Hall of Fame. He was a three-time national Greco-Roman champion and an eleven-time national place winner. Sipe was the first alternate to the 1968 and 1972 Greco Olympic Teams. He coached at the University of Washington for six years—three as head coach and three as assistant—winning the Pac-10 league title. Sipe was selected as the NCAA Rookie Coach of the Year and the Pac-10 Coach of the Year. His teams at UW had a dual record of 38-12-1. His collegiate wrestlers won 12 Pac-10 titles and three national places.
Sipe taught and coaches wrestling at Newport High School for 31 years, compiling a dual meet record of 251-63-3. His teams won the KingCo League title six times and the Region II title once. Sipe coached 26 state place winners. During this time he also coaches track and football. He has served as a representative for the WSWCA, led cultural exchanges and served as the State Tournament Director four times. Sipe was selected as the 1993 “AAA” State Coach of the Year, was a six-time KingCo League Coach of the Year and twice honored as the Regional Coach of the Year.
Darren and his wife Jan have six children between them and six grandchildren.
