The
illustrious career started when Dick wrestled at Lincoln High in Tacoma
for Hall of Famer Harry Bird and then he continued his wrestling while
at the University of Puget Sound. His first job was as an assistant
to Hall of Famer, Ray Barnes at Puyallup High.
Coach Pruett then started the wrestling program at Kent-Meridian in
1966 and served as head coach for 26 years. He compiled a dual match
record of 298-72-7. His teams amassed 17 league titles, 14 Sub Regional
Championships, were Regional Champs 10 times and produced 3 State
Championships, 2nd and 4 thirds, totaling 9 times placing in the top
3 in State. Individually Dick's wrestlers claimed 80 League Champs,
62 Regional Champs, and 16 State Champs(one of those being his son
Joe, who took the 135 title in 1985.) Dick counts 63 wrestlers as
state placers, too.
For his unselfish commitment to our sport Dick was voted the "AAA"
Coach of the Year in 1977. His involvement at camp, clinics and with
freestyle wrestling has earned him the respect of his fellow coach
as well as wrestlers from throughout the state. He served as coach
for the Washington Junior National Team for five years and since his
retirement in 1992 he has assisted with our Mat Classic.
Nominated by Mike Hess, Head Wrestling Coach at Edmonds-Woodway High
