| Stan Opp began wrestling as a sophomore in South Dakota and was a two-time state champion for
Central High School. He continued his wrestling at South Dakota State and was twice a NCAA Division II finalist with a 94-19-1 record. He was active at the national level as a competitor winning the AAU Open and USWF Open. He finished 5th in the World
University Games held in Moscow, Russia in 1973.
Opp’s coaching career started at Eastern Washington University where he was the head coach from 1977-82. During his tenure the Eagles finished 2nd and 3rd in the NAIA Championships. He moved to Wenatchee HS in 1983 and coached the Panthers for the next 21 years, with a dual meet record of 170-63-2. Opp coached four state champions and 40 state place winners. During the 1990’s, Opp’s teams placed in the top-8 at state nine consecutive years, including a 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finish. Opp was named the Big-9 Coach of the Year four times.
Opp is a member of the South Dakota State Wrestling Hall of Fame, Class of 2000. He was awarded the Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence by SDSU in 1999. Opp was also inducted in the the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2008 for his Lifetime Achievements to the sport of wrestling.
He continues to teach at Wenatchee while coaching boys golf and offering his time to wrestling at the high school and kids level.
