| Charlie
Miller spent 30 years in the coaching profession, the first twenty-one
years of those at West Valley High School (Spokane) and the final
nine at East Valley High School (Spokane). During that time his
teams compiled a dual meet record of 280-192-2 and his 1972 team
won the state title. He coached thirteen state champions and 71
state placers. Three of those wrestlers went on to win Junior College
Championships and one captured a NAIA national title.
Charlie recieved
a Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association award in recognition
of 21 years of service to the sport of wrestling upon retiring from
West Valley in 1983. Charlie had initiated kids wrestling programs
at both West Valley and East Valley, and served as a coach of the
cultural exchange team to Japan in 1977.
Charlie was
selected as the Frontier League Coach of the year three consecutive
years from 1988-1990. Charlie was honored as the 1994 Washington
State “AA” Coach of the Year and received the 1994 WIAA
Service Award. Charlie also recieved the Spokane Chamber of Commerce
“Greater Spokane Sports Association ‘25’ Years
of service” award for contribution to Inland Empire Sports
Programs in 1994. 1994 was a banner year for Charlie as he also
had two state champions and retired from teaching and coaching.
Charlie has
retired to Banning, California where he and his wife Gail enjoy
golfing, club activities, travel, clay sculpture, painting and grandchildren.
They were married in 1959 and have three children, Myke, Laurie,
and Mark, plus two grandaughters Jessica and Kayli
