| Fred
Kalal was born in Inglewood, California and later moved to Washington
where he attended R.A. Long High School, graduating in 1957. While
in high school he participated in wrestling, coached by Les Smith,
and earned the Inspirational Award for football in 1956. He would
go on to attend Lower Columbia CC and Washington State University,
graduating in 1962.
In 1962, Fred
started his teaching and coaching career as Foster Junior-Senior
High School. He was there for two years. In 1965, Fred took a teaching
assistantship at the University of Washington. Fred taught wrestling
to the freshman physical education classes, served as the wrestling
intramural director, and assisted with the university's wrestling
program. After completing work on his masters degree, Fred moved
to Fremont, California, where he became the Head Wrestling coach
at John F. Kennedy High School. He remained at Kennedy for six years.
While in Fremont, Fred was a finalist for "Citizen of the Year."
Returning to
Longview in 1971, Fred became head coach at his alma mater, R.A.
Long High School. He would remain there until his retirement in
1994. During his years at R.A. Long, his teams earned five league
championships, five district championships, a regional championship,
and six regional runner-up placings. Fred coached seven state champions
and 38 state "AA" place winners. Pat Connors, Washington's
only 4-time state champion wrestled for Kalal in the 1990's. He
has had eight wrestlers go on to achieve All American status in
college. 22 of his former wrestlers have entered the coaching ranks.
In his 29 years of coaching, his teams earned a record of 184 wins,
166 losses and 6 ties.
Fred has been
an active member of the coaching ranks. He has served as Secretary
and Publicity Director of the WSWCA and was a state representative
for Scholastic Wrestling News. He served as the Region III Representative
for wrestling. Fred earned the Region III-AA Coach of the Year and
the Washington State AA Coach of the Year in 1993.
Fred and his
wife Marjorie have four children, Tim, Kevin, Karen and Mark. Tim
played for the 1990 National Championship team at the University
of Miami and is the holder of the NCAA record for fewest punt return
yards allowed as a punter. Their son Kevin works for the Tacoma
Rainiers while serving as the Publicity Director for the WSWCA.
Their dusghter Karen is a graduate of R.A. Long High School, where
she competed in Cross Country and Track. During her tenure at R.A.
Long she held many records in both sports and was a state competitor
in Cross Country. Their son Mark graduated from Mark Morris High
School in June of 1997. He was a state competitor in Track and was
an All-Conference quarterback and punter for the Monarchs.
