Gary was a novice assistant coach for Eric Beardsley for 3 years before being the head coach at Moses Lake for 5 years. His record at Moses Lake was 129 wins and 13 losses including 3 state titles. He then became the head coach at Grays Harbor College and compiled a 253-47 record during his 17 years and won 11 State Junior College Titles.

In 2009, the WSWCA honored Frey with the Tomaras Award.
