| Born
in Bellingham on March 29, 1940 Bruce attended Burlington-Edison
High School where he was coached by Hall of Famer Bo Campbell and
graduated in 1958. Bruce wrestled at Washington State University
where he was captain in 1962.
Bruce's first
job was at Meadowdale High School where in 1963 he started the wrestling
program in a brand new school which had only sophomores and juniors.
That was the only year in his 30 year career where he did not have
wrestlers competing at the state tournament. Bruce's dual record
during those thirty years was 265-111-1 and he produced two "AA"
State Championship teams. Eight individual champions including sons
Scott (1983) and Brad (1984 & 1985). Both sons wrestled for
their dad's alma mater at WSU until the program was dropped. Brad
finished at Boise state and Scott at Utah State where he was an
All-American in 1987.
Coach Cook was
selected as the "AAA" Coach of the Year by the WSWCA in
1982. He also served as treasurer of the WSWCA, was one of the founders
of the Rhino Kids Wrestling Club, served on the state freestyle
board and has been a wrestling official and coach of the Junior
National Freestyle Team.
Bruce and his
wife Helen of 35 years are both retired and reside in Mt. Vernon,
Washington.
Bruce was nominated
by Pat Alexander and was inducted by sons Brad and Scott Cook.
