Known
by many as "The Father of the Cultural Exchange" in the
State of Washington, Gene Cerino started his wrestling coaching career
at Castle Rock High School from 1955 to 1958 and completed twenty
years as head coach at Auburn High School, retiring in 1979. At Auburn
he organized the first freestyle tournaments in Washington and hosted
the first international high school meet which featured prepsters
against a Japanese All-Star squad. He was instrumental in the establishment
of the cultural exchange program that is renown throughout the nation.
During his career his teams won five league championships and four
regional titles. At the state level, his teams were in the top four
finishers five times, including a second place finish. This included
seventeen state individual place winners and five state champions.
Coach Cerino also was a member of the State Rules Committee and served
on the National Federation Rules Committee.
Ed Arima, former head coach at Sumner High School, former wrestler,
assistant coach and Hall of Fame Member inducted Coach Cerino.
