| Bruce
Burns started the wrestling program at Mariner High School in 1970
and quickly brought the program to the forefront of the WESCO League
where they were league champions ten times. During his twenty years
as head coach Mariner won the district championship thirteen times,
the regional championship twelve times and placed in the top ten
at state seven times including a second and a third. Coach Burns
produced eight individual state champions and 41 place winners.
From 1975-1983
Mariner compiled 112 consecutive dual meet wins, the longest ever
in our state and the second longest nationally. Bruce's career dual
meet record was 246-47 and in 1977 he received the Everett Herald's
Man of the Year award in sports. Coach Burns is typified as a positive
thinker with a forceful personality who was adept at obtaining the
maximum results from his wrestlers.
