Bird compiled an outstanding record as a wrestling coach during
his coaching career at both Lincoln High School and Wilson High
School, both in Tacoma, Washington. At the first State Tournament
in 1953, Harry's Lincoln team was runner-up to Sedro Woolley, but
came back in 1954 to take the title with four individual state champions.
They repeated with the team title again in 1955 collecting four
individual titles. During his tenure at Lincoln and Wilson, Harry
produced a total of sixteen individual state champions.
Harry Bird was
inducted into the WSWCA Hall of Fame posthumously by Mr. Dick Pruett,
a former wrestler and now a Hall of Fame member from Kent-Meridian
High School. Harry's widow, Evelyn Bird accepted the honor on his
behalf. |
