Jim Bair put Castle Rock wrestling on the map. After starting the wrestling programs at Pomeroy and Republic in Eastern Washington, Bair moved across the state to Castle Rock where he inherited a program that was overshadowed by the school’s strong basketball tradition. In his first year as the coach of the Rockets, he led the team to a 5th place finish at regionals. Over the next 15 seasons, Bair won 13 Trico League titles and two state championships while compiling a 234-37-4 record (85%). He finished his career with 285 wins against only 56 losses and six ties.
During his tenure at Castle Rock, Bair led “The Rock” to nine top-ten finishes at the state tournament, Castle Rock won the state 1A/B state title in 1984 with three individual champs, and again a year later with two champions. They would finish runner-ups twice (1981 and 1982) and third once (1983). From 1975 to 1988 Castle Rock won twelve straight league titles. CR won five regional titles during this time, fished second six times, and never finished below fifth. Bair’s team also won nine league tournament championships.
In his final year at the high school level, Bair led “The Rock” to a tenth place finish at state while being named the 1A/B Coach of the Year. While coaching at the high school level, Jim was instrumental in the development of Castle Rock Youth Wrestling. In 1990 Bair took over as head coach at Castle Rock Middle School and was named 2A Middle School Coach of the Year in 2002.
