Lee Andersen was a 2-time NAIA All-American wrestler
At Western Washington University, lettering four times and was selected as the team captain and the WWU Athlete of the Year in 1972. Andersen was selected as the WWU Wrestler of the Century in 1999 and is a member of the WWU Hall of Fame. Following graduation in 1972, Andersen moved to Ferndale High School where he continues to teach and coach.
Andersen served as Ferndale’s assistant wrestling coach for two years, and has been the head coach since 1974. Lee’s wrestling teams have compiled a dual record of 228 wins, 132 losses and 2 ties, and won the state title in 1992 along with to other top-four finishes. He has coached seven state champions and 53 state placers. Andersen traveled to Japan (1978) and Germany (1979) as the coach for the Washington High School Wrestling Cultural Exchange Teams.
Andersen has been an active member of the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association, serving as President for six years from 1993-1999, and Past-President. Lee also served as Vice President and a Representative at Large, both four years terms. In 1995 Andersen was selected as the National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches Association “Regional Coach of The Year for Region VIII (consisting of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and Washington). In 1996 he was selected as the USA Wrestling Magazine “Washington State Wrestling Man of the Year.” He was honored with the 1998 William Tomaras Award (WSWCA Coaches) for excellence in the promotion and development of wrestling in Washington State.
Andersen and his wife Julie live in Ferndale, Lee was inducted by his to children, Jennifer Andersen and Tyler Andersen.
